F3 U.T.I. turns 9 and other cool stuff…

The Friday prior I attended Gump’s 12 Year Anniversary Q at Cletus.  As we worked out Gump asked each of us “How many years with F3?” and “What’s kept us coming back?  What does it mean to you?”.  With my anniversary a week away, I had already started thinking about what F3 meant to me and Gump challenged me to really dig deep and think back on my almost 9 years.

Well that just took me down a rabbit hole.  I started looking at our F3 PAX album, going back to look at backblasts, and recalling all of the people and the things I had experienced.  I started to realize how many classes of F3 PAX had come and gone.  There are still some guys around from 9 years ago but some of them had left for different reasons – family, work, moving to other locations, injury.

How many of them still looked back on their F3 glory days?  Would they come back?

I made a list of names based on the backblasts and photos.  Not comprehensive, somewhat random.  That Friday, I put up a pre-pre blast with my intention to reach out to this list and asked PAX to come up with their own lists and reach out too.  I started to text…

Venkman, Oyster, Lawn Dart, WebEx, R-22, Coal Ash, Tetanus, Yoshi, Soft Serve, Kosher, Straight Cash, Genie, Huggies, Bobby Boucher, Fanny Pack, Sprinkler, Axe (with an E), Martini, Oh Yeah, Cowboy, Aquaman, SlideRule, Warbucks, Lipstick, Skidmark, DawgPound, M4L, Emeril, Redenbacher, Bernie, Wallaby, Stubs, Leftovers, Stickers, Skittles, Particle Board, Pacman, FedEx, Peeping Tom, Wiggly, The Natural, Blue Hen, Flanigan, ShamWow, Dahmer, Master Shake, Snap, Shredder, Fonzi, Lipsync, Patch, Crosby

By Monday, I had about 25 HCs/SCs from the list and another 9 HCs on the post (fitting).  I didn’t get to the whole list, I didn’t have all the contact info, but I did what I could.  I had Gemini make me a little teaser image without the names and updated the pre-pre-blast post.

By Thursday, I had a few extra names from the list.  Some SCs had become HCs, some had to drop.  The Pre-blast launched and it was a flurry of comments and emojis.  By the end, 22 PAX had HCd on Slack.  Some overlapped with my Kotters list, some didn’t.  This was going to be big… Like 30 guys!?  I planned from the start to pay homage to my first FNG workout Q’d by Emeril and CHIPs.  I reviewed it and it checked out as appropriate for this sized group.  Emeril and CHIPs had 33 PAX that morning…  The table was set, the coffeteria plans were ordered (thanks again Pikachu, Gizmo, BnB, Abe, Rico, and Wild Turkey)

BTW – Hit up Rico if you want to order those pastries he brought.  They were amazing and he’s pledged to support my requested 3rd F cause for the day with a portion of any proceeds.

Oh wait… one last minute addition.  Downrange and Full House are calling for EC…  As Full House reminded me “Go Big or Go Home”  FML ok fine.  I set my alarm for 4:20.

EC: Full House, Gillette, and Downrange for 2 miles

We returned to a packed Cletus parking lot with an overwhelming number of faces and the cars kept rolling in.  Peeping Tom, one of my original EHs from WoodCreek had traveled from JACOGA to be here as promised.  Fanny Pack!  SlideRule! Stickers!  Wiggly!  TomTom (Thanks Bumblebee)!?  Dahmer!  Shredder!  Fonzi too!

There were more but my head was spinning and I felt like I was at a wedding.  So many people I wanted to catch up with and only time for a quick hello but we’d have to wait for coffeteria.

We did a count-off…  50 PAX counted!!!  WHAT!?!?

FNGs: Welcome 404 (Wed Developer), Yooper (Formerly from norther Michigan but not the U.P.)

In my haste to get moving and get this crowd away from the residential, I forgot all about our FNGs.  As the group started their mozy to the back lot.  Someone shouted to remind me and I ran back through the crowd to give em the disclaimer.  9 years of F3 hadn’t prepared me to manage this workout but heck most of my smaller workouts I get the checklist a little twisted.  And we mozy’d on.  TO THE BACK LOT!

Oh hey!  It’s CROSBY!!!  walking the trail to catch up with us for the workout.  51 PAX is now the count

The Workout: Thang 1, Parking lot – B O M B S
Partner up, similar to Dora 1-2-3 but more exercises. Partner up. Pax 1 does exercise while Pax 2 runs to from the back of the lot to the entrance and back. Swap out and continue the exercise until each amount of reps are complete. The exercises and reps are: 50- Burpees / 100- Overhead Claps / 150- Merkins / 200- LBC’s / 250- Squats.

^^^This text was ripped almost exactly as it was written from my FNG workout backblast which was originally posted to our Facebook group on 7/24/2017.  Slight details changed since the original venue was Paradise City.

I did get the chance for some cool exchanges with this crew as we passed each other through the workout.  Fives, fist bumps, and mumblechatter.  It was pretty awesome.

Warm Up: good morning, windmills, willie mays haze, SSH

Once again, I was all mixed up.  We never did a warm-up so I decided to put this in the middle as a palette cleanser.

The Workout: Thang 2, Catch me if you can

Same partners, partner 1 does 2 burpees while partner 2 takes off.  Once burpees are done, partner 1 runs after to catch partner 2.  Once caught, they switch and continue until back at the flags.  The route was from the back lot, around the baseball fields by way of the parking lot entrance, back around to the bridge, right at the shelter passing the playground on the right, around the Soccer fields and back to the main parking lot.

Mary: Despite Lipstick’s prediction based on my first ever Q, the workout filled the whole time and there was nothing left for Mary.  COT began immediately on the tennis courts.

Announcements:  What a amazingly crazy morning with all the PAX at Cletus.  I wanted to post here to put some emphasis on a surprise/not surprise NANTAN announcement this morning.  the surprise… Breach ran along side me on the way back to the flags and said something like “seems like a good time to announce you as NANTAN”  the not surprise, I asked for the job.  I want to thank Breach for his leadership.  He took charge post-covid as we were looking to re-energize South Wake and has done an amazing job navigating tough conversations and building on our already awesome community.  As long as I’ve known him, he has always lived in all 3 Fs.  The Marine in him has given him some special skills in 1st F | For 2nd F, he’s always down for coffee, beer, and a good time.  Especially if there are costumes involved. |  You wouldn’t have had to be around long to know how big of a 3rd F heart Breach has in his charitable giving, his leadership with Travis Manion, road side clean-up, and the list goes on.  Thank you Breach and I look forward to turning to you for your guidance.

T-Claps (Recognition):  All of these men for beating the fartsack to join me on this crazy spectacular morning.  I had a bunch of fun and loved seeing the band back together.  52 PAX in all for a single workout.  So much brotherhood and support felt.

A separate shout out to Crosby for his loving donation of a kidney and his willingness to join us during his recovery.

Prayer: X-Rays mission trip safety and success.  Flip Phone’s family as they mourn their loss.  All others spoken and unspoken.

Warm Up: good morning, merkins, imperial walkers, hill billies, ssh

The Workout: First time at Possum Trot so I arrived a few minutes early to survey the dark parking lot. Its almost as dark as Purple Cobra. I had a few ideas in mind, all of which included rocks. We moseyed to a freshly painted line where we lined up holding a high plank and each PAX bear crawled to the end of the line.

Main event

Each PAX grabbed a flat-ish rock for bear crawl rock push between the No Parking sign and light pole while their partner started 100 ground pounders, 100 curls for the girls and 100 triceps for the guys. There was much groaning over rock size and pavement quality.

The Workout: eight Pax fished coupons out of the tree and John Cusacked them to the field. After rotating between backward walks, Merkins and squats, the PAX moved via murder bunnies back-and-forth on the field sprinkling in ground pounders, goblet squats, merkins on your bunny rut rows and dead lifts. UTI destroyed his bunny early – he may have aggressively exercised it.  The PAX then returned their bunnies to the tree and then moseyed to the outhouse where Preacher‘s chair and balls, the wall were counted off by all PAX. Windmills x10 IC

Imperial Walker x10 IC

Hillbillies x10 IC

Workout:

We moseyed to the front of the school.  YHC counted 20 poles holding up the awning.  I came up with a routine a few years back that I call a crab boil.  We started at the first pole and crab walked 5 poles.  At the 5th pole we did 10 crab cakes in cadence.  Then we crab walked another 5 poles and did 10 crab humpers.  Another 5 poles were crab walked where we then did 10 crab jacks.  We crab walked the next 5 poles and were done.

After that we did something I call a typewriter.  We all got on a length of curb and held plank on the curb.  We did one irkin and then the last person in the line moved in some fashion (bear crawl, duck walk, etc.) to the other side of the line.  Once there we did another irkin and the next person went.  We did this all the way to the end where then, like a typewriter, we had to go back.  We mixed it up on the way back though and did fast feet on the curb while one PAX moved and did 5 calf raises when they got to their spot.

After this YHC called for crab boil leftovers.  It was the same as before just not as much. We only used 10 poles and stopped every two.

After that we moved to a patch of grass for the sake of our knees and got to work on a set of Jack Webb with a 4:1 ratio of air presses to merkins.  This was a bad idea.  Woody and I both got mad at Nemo while we watched him never take a break during the course of the 220 air presses we did.

I had more planned but time was running short so we went in to…

Mary:

We started with an LBC circuit.  10x IC each of regular LBC, reverse LBC, and oblique LBC on each side.

Sleeping Hillbilies x10 IC

American Hammers x10 IC

Pickle Pounders x10 IC

Monkey Humperx x10 IC (I couldn’t remember the name pickle pounder and kept wanting to say monkey humper so we did monkey humpers)

An honor to lead these men this morning.  I can’t get anything off a shelf in the cupboard today but that’s ok.

Cleaning the Soccer Field

FNGs: none

Warm Up: Good Mornings, Side Straddle Hops, 5 penalty burpees, Hillbillies, Imperial Walkers, Daisy Pickers, Sir Fazio Arm Circles, Seal Claps, Overhead Claps

The Workout: Two things today.

Thing 1: 7s on the Abyss
PAX moseyed over to the Abyss, everyone’s favorite ride at Disney. At the top, YHC gave the run down. Merkins at the top, squats at the bottom. Plank hold and squat hold for the 6 and then exercises performed together. We made short work of that business and moseyed over to the soccer field.

Thing 2: 4 corners on the soccer field
On approach to the soccer field, it was observed that the previous tenants had left a number of things on the field, mostly water bottles.
PAX were instructed how 4 corners would go. An exercise at each corner with karaokes in between. Corner one had 5 merkins, corner two had 10 merkins, corner three had 15 merkins, corner four went back down to 10 merkins and then we did 5 more merkins at start.
Then we switched it to squats and did the same thing, backpedaling between corners.
We spotted a few more water bottles scattered around the field, so PAX each ran out and grabbed a couple and disposed of them.
Back to start for Mary.

Mary: Popcorn Mary

Announcements: June 12th mulching

T-Claps (Recognition): All PAX present for helping to clean the soccer field.

Prayer: Ka-Chow’s final exam today, remembering those who gave their lives defending our country

Good Ol’ String O’ Pearls

Weather: 47°, about perfect

FNGs: nada

Warm Up: SSH, Good Mornings, Imperial Walkers, Hill Billies, Frankensteins, Sir Fazio Arm Circles, Seal Claps, Overhead Claps

The Workout: String of pearls. Probably because of my ADHD but I love this workout. You’re always seeing something new. The way it works is you run a bit, stop for an exercise and then carry on. Run, exercise, run, exercise.

Exercises covered were all the favorites. Merkins, squats, lunge walk, dips, bulgarian squat. We made our way from Womble through downtown and back, covering about 1.6 miles.

Mary: popcorn Mary

Announcements: 2nd Friday 2nd F lunch tomorrow

Paradise City Throwback

Warm Up:

  • good mornings, windmills, sir fazios, goofballs, SSH, imperial walkers, hillbillies

The Workout:

YHC went looking for inspriation for a Paradise City workout.  I love digging through BackBlast to see what’s been done before to inform what I’ll do.  It just makes planning a little easier.  I could just ask AI to make me a workout, but there is something about knowing who ran the workout I’m borrowing and when did they run it.  Just feels a little nostalgic and fun.  This one comes from Deadbolt circa 2021 “Spartan 500”

Keep writing backblasts.  You never know who they might inspire to show-up or make leading a workout a little easier.

Our workout today is explained in this picture.  Looking back again at Deadbolts BB, I think the intention was to do all 50 reps at each corner with the goal to move fast enough to complete 10 laps before the end of the workout.

I modified and had us do Merkins in the first lap with 10 at each corner.  With each subsequent exercise replacing the last one through the list.  Deadbolt also prescribed a team-based model.  I opted to keep everyone together.  It was perfect for us in terms of time and it allowed me to keep my pre-blast promises to stay under the former standard of 3 miles.
