Just the Tip for Mary

PAX:  Bondo, Yogurt, Ricoh_Suave, Kosher, Wild Turkey, U.T.I, Woody

FNGs:  None

EC:  Woody and U.T.I got caught up in quality mumblechatter and ended up with 2.5 mi.  Nice.
Warm Up:  Quick mosey to Center St(?) for Good Mornings, Frankenstein, Sir Fazio Arm Circles.  I forgot to do a count-o-rama.

The Workout:  Selfish is as selfish does.  My workout schedule these days revolves around my training for the Holly Springs Half Marathon, and with my focus always on not overdoing it with my legs I used this opportunity to go balls out with upper body.  As usual I lost track of what exactly I had planned and completely omitted any shoulder work but it seemed to work out just fine.

Start with some 11’s up and down Center St.  Merkins at the bottom of the hill, squats at top.  Wild Turkey rolled in late and joined us about 3 rounds in.

I invited a delivery driver to join us as we ran past him.  He did not join us.

Mosey to the rock pile for medium/large-ish selections.  Lined up on the sidewalk just next to the pile for curls for the girls, mosey around the traffic circle, back to rocks for skull crushers – 25 count each, I think.  Mosey to starting parking lot, 25 standard merkins.  Continue up Ballentine to the brick half wall for 25 dips, then return to starting parking lot for more merkins.

Repeato – Curls, traffic circle, skull crushers, mosey to merkins, mosey to dips

  • Next stop at starting lot for merkins we used a wide hand stance. Hands about 10-12” wider than standard position.  Good stuff.

Repeato – Curls, traffic circle, skull crushers, mosey to merkins, mosey to dips.

  • Next stop at lot for merkins we did what P90X calls “Floor Flys”…not sure if there’s an F3 name for it, but it goes like this: Starting in plank position, slide your right hand out to the right about 12”-15” and perform a merkin.  Return that hand to starting position, repeat with left hand.  I lost count but think we did about 10 reps (5 each hand).  Not easy.  But awesome.

Repeato – Curls, traffic circle, skull crushers, mosey to merkins, mosey to dips, return to merkins.

Woody chased a cyclist to the traffic circle.  Did not catch him.

Mary:  With just a couple minutes left, we squeezed 20 i.c. LBCs into Mary.  No time for more, just the tip.  Having completed, on our sixes, we took a few seconds to gaze upon the glorious clear sky, filled with bright twinkling stars.  Heavenly.
Announcements:  Holly Fest volunteer/F3 marketing opportunity coming up.  No need to commit to the whole day, 30 min/1 hr slots will be available.
Prayer:  Ricoh Suave’s friend – father/son team both on ventilators with China Flu.  Gave thanks for another day, another gift.

3-Alarm 8/24/21 – Fartsack Explained, Gatorade Expired, With Some Dead Animal Stench in Between

FNGs: Cole (F3 Snooze)
Warm Up: Count off and pre-run announcements
The Workout: 4 miles in Hilly Glen

Back in June, 3-Alarm (Davis) wanted to share a few words before each workout, so he texted me those words for my delivery at the next run. What I didn’t expect was to video myself speaking those words on Davis’ behalf and then sending the video to him for review. Since then, I’ve delivered Davis’ speech every time we have new runners at SouthWake’s best AO (certainly the most joyful). And I’ve embellished it each time with Davis’ approval. Davis also asked us to define F3 terms, so he can participate in the conversation and not be confused by Purple Cobra, Merkin, AO, COT, and of course, Fartsack. Today, @Dumbo entertained all—especially @3-Alarm, with his firsthand account of Fartsacking.

After these standard announcements and a count-off of 12, then 13 with Cupid’s late arrival, we took off. Very impressive seeing 13 PAX run up the street with Davis rolling and the flag waving.

For the second time this month, Davis brought an FNG. This week, we picked up Cole, a senior at HSHS and avid rugby player and sleeper. It took us a minute to find his house, but Davis came through. Cole joined us on a run wearing sweat pants—the big, heavy cotton type that would be great if you were camping in 20 degree weather. But it was 95 degrees out. I asked if he wanted to change and he said no. Cole hammered through the run in spite of bruises and old injuries (broken femur five years ago). At COT, he earned the name @Snooze because it takes several alarms to wake him up in the morning. When asked what he likes to do for fun, he said he likes to chill and doze off, hence the name @Snooze, penned by @Pikachu. Davis had met Cole and recruited him while on a walk the week before.

We also swung by Charlie’s house. Earlier in August, we picked up FNG Charlie—an avid BMX’er and MTB’er, who earned the name @Cash Roll after a BMX trick invented by Daniel Dhers (2021 Olympic Silver medalist, BMX freestyle; and owner/operator of Daniel Dhers Action Sports Complex, right here in little ol’ Holly Springs). Finally, we got going on rhythm with the run. Down Avent Meadows, up Holly Moor. Here, Cole pushed Davis straight up the hill with an assist from Pikachu. This is not an easy hill!

Several runners rotated in to push Davis—Emeril, Dumbo. We stopped at intersections to let cars go by and to keep our PAX together. Pikachu showed us how to climb Holly Thorn Trace, nearly a mile straight uphill, going faster pushing Davis than most of us can run solo. The stop sign at the top is a good spot to rest, catch your breath, and pick up the six. But today, there was the distinct odor of a dead animal. This thing made the landfill smell like roses. After picking up the six, we gladly moved on.

Cupid had the privilege to push Davis back down the hill. On the way back, Cancun found us as he drove his search vehicle through the neighborhood. He and both 2.0s rolled back to the house and set up the splash zone. Maybelline and I bolted back to the house—Maybelline to hop in the car to pick up his son and me to help splash.

Pikachu ran Davis back and forth through the sprinkler. Cancun’s 2.0 Oliver freely squirted just about everyone with a squirt gun and exclaimed the my SUV was not a “truck.” Wild Turkey soaked Davis’ hat and placed it on Davis’ head. Dumbo and others stuck their head in the sprinkler. COT and one burpee by Pikachu and we were done. Finally, after most had left, Wild Turkey and Snooze were enjoying some Gatorade, when Snooze realized it was expired by 2 years! Uh oh. Davis got a real kick out of that. If Wild Turkey and Snooze return next time, we’ll know they are OK. Another successful 3-Alarm run!

Magic Number 36

Three years ago today several neighborhood friends dragged me to Kenny’s Grave to suffer a beat down by Banana Seat.  All I can really remember about it was how disappointed I was every time he said “recover” because I really thought that meant we got a chance to catch our breath.  Boy, was I wrong.  But here we are, three years later, having done things I would have previously said were impossible, all because of you men that have surrounded me over this time.  I am thankful for all of you and appreciate you all more than you know.

All that said, I did set out to kick your asses today.

Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) time was against us today.  My plan was to do 36 reps of 16 different exercises but 45 minute just wasn’t enough time to make that happen.  I’d still like to think we got some good work in and got a good sweat going.

FNGs:

Welcome Just the Tip!

He’s a coworker of Fumunga’s.  His first job was at a restaurant, hence the name.

Warm Up:

No warm up lap since YHC is still nursing a heel issue.  Circled up for:

SSH x36 IC

Windmill x10 IC

Frankensteins x10 IC

Sir Fazio Arm Circles x10 IC forward and reverse

The Workout:

The Red October boys went up to the pavilion to do some TRX while we moseyed down towards the first stretch of parking spaces for my favorite routine, the Crab Boil!

We started at one parking line and crab walked two spaces.  We did Crab Cakes x12, crab walked another two spaces, Crab Humpers x12, crab walked another two spaces, Crab Jacks x12.  After that we took a break and did irkins x12, dirkins x12, and squats x12.  We worked our way back up the parking lot doing the same and then back down.  36 reps of those exercises done.

Next we moseyed down to the lower pavilion for some rock work.  Everyone grabbed a rock and did:

Curls for the girls x12

Tris for the guys x12

Bus drivers x12

We rotated rocks and did it another two time for a total of 36 reps a piece.

After that we traveled with our rocks up to the lot behind the swimming pool.  Here we did shoulder taps x12, bear crawled and pushed our rock across the lot, and then Bobby Hurly x12, and then bear crawl and push the rock back.  We did this two more times, but with the second and third laps being duck walks with rocks and then sprints.

We returned all but one rock (the largest) and then Indian walked while passing the rock down the line up to the bathrooms.  Here we lined up against the wall in People’s Chair.  The rock started at one end and was passed all the way down the line to the other end.  That was 1.  It traveled back for 2.  We continued until 12 were complete.  After that it was a 12 count IC balls to the wall.  YHC wanted to do it all another two times but the clock had other plans.  We did one more round of People’s Chair and BTTW, each in 12 count, before heading up to the Red October guys for Mary.

Oh, I almost forgot that I tried to also sprinkle 36 burpees in as well, doing 6 each time  we transitioned from exercise group.  We had gotten three sets in and were supposed to do the other three with the people’s chair and BTTW but, again, time was not my friend.

Mary:

American Hammer x10 IC

LBC x10 IC

Reverse LBC x10 IC

Knees to the left LBC x10 IC

Knees to the right LBC x10 IC

Men, it’s always an honor to lead and even more so to do on a day where I’m reminded what this all means.  I was very excited to also have Boy George and Noah’s Ark at CoT with us as they were both there at my first post as well.  I know they didn’t plan it that way but I thought it was pretty awesome.  Thanks for indulging me today.  I hope in three more years I’m writing another one of these.

Early 4 Year at Disney

My 4 year would be the Memorial Day Murph, but out of town plans led me to ask Dawgpound if I could take the Q from him at Disney for an early celebration. This was just before the challenge and I appreciate he gave up a coveted Q spot late in the month, and was pleased to see he picked up a different AO this morning. It was an honor to lead, was pleased to see such a great turnout, and what better place than Disney for me to celebrate. I am a proud Disney site Q alum. Preblast promised nothing fancy, just moving around and putting in the work, with a guarantee of a good tour.

FNGs: None today, so no bonus point awarded
Warm Up: Quick jog around lot, circled up for Good Mornings, Daisy Pickers, Windmills, Imp Walkers, Hillbillies and had to throw in Goofballs for good measure. 5 burpees OYO too.
The Workout: Jog around back of fields and down the hill to the road, circled up for a couple sets alternating SSH ICx20 and a shoulder burn (arms out, fazio front, arms out, fazio reverse, arms out, seal claps, arms out, overhead claps, arms out, recover). On the jog back to entrance and grabbed a low pole for alternating deep tempo dips ICx10 and tempo merkins ICx10. Did this 4 times. On the jog to the lower lot, each man on a line, dropped to plank hold, shoulder taps, plank hold, nipplers, chill cut, merkins, plank hold, recover. Did this 2 time. On the jog to back corner of building for alternating low slow flutters ICx20, 15 and 10, with the other half holding BTTW, so 3x on the wall for each of us. On the jog to big lot lined up in groups of 4 for a bear crawl Indian Run. PAX hold plank while man in back bear crawls to front. Each man did 4 bear crawls. 10 quick merkins to burn out and then on the jog to The Abyss for 2 rounds with LBC up top and Star Jumps at bottom. On the jog back to flag.

Dirty Dozen at Prison Yard Thinking About Stirrups

FNGs: No, but welcome back kotter, Tim (Hoege?) a.k.a. Cream of Corn (originally from NE, named in SW 4 yrs ago)
Warm Up:  Many PAX got their point and ran for two miles (~20 mins).  Dumbo missed us at 5:05 am and ran on his own; I overhead him saying waiting in the driveway for Pablo who never came out.  Hope Pablo is OK.  Circled up for the following exercises:  good am, SSH, daisy Pickers, Sir Fazios, seal claps, o/h claps, Mike Phelps…
The Workout:  The warden brought many dumbbells ranging in weight from 15 lbs to 50 lbs.  An index card with a few exercises were written down as a suggestion (implied 10 reps) and dumbbells were spread out over the parking lot.  A 20 lb stretchy thing was added, as well as a cinder block and jump rope.  See pic for details of exercises.  The time keeper was  the 50 lb dumbbell.  Note this 50 pounder was either carried by itself or farmer’s carry (Two 50 lb dumbbells).  Some brave PAX tried the farmer’s carry including Warbucks, Cupid, Shredder…(apologies if I left out anyone).  PAX had to carry the 50 lb dumbbell around the parking lot.  While this was going on, PAX cranked out their respective exercises with their specific weight/tool/coupon.  If no tools were available, PAX were instructed to do core exercises.
Mary:  Circled up for 6 inches, box cutters, and static stretches that included some work on the groin area.  Lots of mumble chatter about stirrups.  It was quite the visual.  Cream of Corn may not come back for another four years.
Announcements:  JOCO CSAUP. Murph on Memorial Day, Bed builds, 5Ks coming up…
T-Claps (Recognition):  PAX showing great effort today especially with the farmer’s carry
Prayer:  Dumbo took us out – thank you!  Prayers for an infant born too early who gave joy to his family for a handful of weeks…..automatically gone to heaven; UNSPOKEN
Thanks PAX for helping me load/unload my car this am.

Honored to lead (Forgot to say the Pledge of Allegiance – thinking about the stirrups I guess).  -Dauber

The elusive albino deer

FNGs: none
Warm Up: SSH, IW, DP’s, Good morning
The Workout: 4 ruckers  + a 2.0 took off for a 3 mile route and some weight based walking.  23 ran 5+ through the Springs this am, with a trip up Elm and a short jaunt on Johnson.  A late pick up of Vasoline and a new route finally gave him the spotting of the elusive albino deer.  Now the real question must be answered…what’s Vasoline searching for now?  An albino racoon, possum, beaver?  Nice work today gents!
Announcements: Still time to get in on the May event, see Fanny Pack for more details…must have 4 PAX to enter.  Yogurt starting some new trail running, catch up with him for more details
Prayer: unspoken today
