Bday Q #3 – Suicide Burpees

It was an even cooler morning with sub-freezing temps around 30 degrees but that didn’t stop the legendary crew that showed up for Possum Trot this morning. Once the party started there was little consideration given to the cold as we didn’t stand still very long.

Thanks for coming out this morning and helping YHC celebrate my birthday. You guys are awesome and you make me better and stronger every day!

Let’s do it again tomorrow at Kenny’s Grave.

FNGs: None

Warm Up:

We moseyed around the tennis courts and circled up in the parking lot to get the blood flowing…
SSH x 20 IC
Daisy Pickers x 10 IC
Windmills x 10 IC
Sir Fazio Arm Circles x 10 forward/ 10 reverse IC
Imperial Walkers x 10 IC
Hillbillies x 10 IC

The Workout:

This workout took place exclusively on the tennis courts…
Part 1: Burpee Suicides – run to the end of court 1, perform 5 burpees, run back to start and perform 5 jump squats. R&R for all 4 courts.
Part 2: Usain Bolts – The man on the end calls out an exercise for everyone else to do while he travels the width of one court and back. Method of travel was one of the following: bear crawl/crawl bear/crab walk/gorilla walk/lunge walk/ duck walk. R&R x3 rounds with a different mode of travel each round. No exercises were repeated. Well done, HIM!
Part 3: Escalator – The man on the end called out a 10 rep exercise which everyone did together in cadence then ran down to the other end of the courts and back. Upon return, the next Pax stacked a second exercise until all added theirs to the stack. A slight audible was called due to time constraints and the rep count was reduced to 5 to make sure we were able to complete the round just in time for COT.
Mary: Included in part 3 of the workout

Thankful for Burpees?

FNGs: none
Warm Up: Jog around the soccer field. Getting back to start, 1 PAX was late parking his brand new shiny pickup, so 5 burpees OYO were called. Then we got to SSH x20, Wind Mill x10, Bat Wings (Fozio arm circles forwards and backwards, seal claps and overhead claps all x20)
The Workout: Thing 1: 7 of diamonds (an exercise at each of the four corners of the baseball field, each round increasing by 7). The gates between the fields were locked, so we ended up running a bit further than planned. Ended up getting a little over 2 miles total. Rounds went like this:
Round 1: 7 burpees (total of 28 burpees all around)
Round 2: 14 WWIIs (56 total)
Round 3: 21 squats IC (84 total, half were standard and half were narrow)
PAX did a good job picking up the six along the way. Time was running out, so it was back to the parking lot for a bit of Thing 2.
Thing 2: Ascending Curb Crawls: PAX started on one side and bear crawled to the other, where they performed 1 derkin. Bear crawl back, 2 derkins. Repeat two more times with 3 derkins and 4 derkins respectively. Mosey the short distance back to start.
Mary: Not necessarily a Mary exercise, but we did 20 more Fozio arm circles (forward and backward), which felt great after bear crawls. 20 American Hammers finished things up.

This year has been a particularly difficult year, one that has probably affected everyone in one way or another. Even in the gloomiest of times, it’s important to take time and reflect on the things that we can still be thankful for. Keep your head up.

Slow is Smooth, Smooth is Strong

Today our work was focus on being slow, holding the pose, and getting stronger. Thus we slowed it down as we built our pyramid.

We did a small number of Turkish Getups. I don’t know why guys don’t like Turkish getups. This is surprising to me. I think it is a problem that we are not doing enough Turkish getups in our workouts.

Have Rock, Will Travel at GP

I picked up the Q the night before the AO and all I had planned was a field trip. Everything else was inspired on the move and it turned out to be a solid beatdown.
FNGs
: 1 – ButterBurger
Warm Up: Circle up for the disclaimer for the FNG and 10 counts in cadence of the following: Side straddle hops, Imperial walkers, Hillbillies, Good mornings, Fozzy arm circles forward and reverse, and Daisy pickers. Then it was off to the rock pile for a medium to large rock with the warning that we will be traveling with it. Also, an additional warning that if the rock was too small then I would be reassigning a new one. All rocks looked solid and we began our mosey that ended up being about 1.5 miles total by the end.
The WorkoutFollow the leader for several alternating rounds of John Cusack and curls for the girls at a nice slow pace for time under tension as we started our walk into the woods.

We stopped  on a path in the woods shortly after the bridge for some 11s – Rock Spanks in cadence, bear crawl, squats on my down, bear crawl and repeat as we cycled from 1/10 to 10/1.

Everyone switched rocks after the 11s and back to the mosey. This time we alternated rounds on the move between tricep extensions in cadence, John Cusack, and a brief pause for squats.

We made our next stop at Veterans Park by the flags. Set our rocks down by the path and find a bench for 15 Irkins, 15 dips, and 15 Derkins. Then it’s time to a switch rocks and back for a quick mosey over to the shelter where we stopped and did 10 Ground Pounders in cadence.

Set the rocks to the side of the path and proceed under the shelter for alternating rounds of Wall Sits and BTTW’s. Once finished it was almost 8 o’clock and we had to get moving to get back for Mary.

Switch rocks and pause for 10 Ruh rohs in cadence followed by more alternating rounds of John Cusack and curls for the girls at a slow cadence on the move. We stopped at the start of one of the disc golf holes on the way back for some calf raises and then once again switched rocks.

Continue the mosey with John Cusack and tricep extensions. The six were falling behind so we switched to lunges while they caught up. We alternated John Cusack and overhead press along with a few reps of look at the pretty trees (thanks to Quiver) as we finally made it back to the rock pile to return the rocks.

Mary: We had about 10 minutes for Mary and with all of the exploring we did I had to throw in some Dora. Partner up for 50 World War II‘s, 100 Freddie Mercury ‘s, and 150 mountain climbers, while you alternate jogging around the parking lot. For the final minute of the Q everyone did mountain climbers to make sure that we had enough reps for Dora. After that final minute everyone was sufficiently smoked.

Announcements: Holly Springs Half is next weekend and volunteers are needed to man the aid stations.
T-Claps (Recognition): Frenchie and Macho Nacho bringing out another FNG. We had 4 Pax under the age of 20!
Prayer: Pax and their families, as well as the state of the country.

A Few of my Favorite Things

6 for EC! Probably some kind of Sheepdog Record. Shredder, Sparky, Dovetail, Fumunga, Martini, and Quiver for 2 miles.

Warm Up:

  • Body circles
  • Indian run: Jog/high knees/butt kickers/karaoke
  • Samson stretch
  • Lunge pulse
  • Inch worm, jump legs forward, then back pedal to start

The Workout:

Bikes, books, guns, keyboards

After each “favorite thing,” sprint from one end of the lot to the last median, then a jog once around the lot.

AK-47s

Start laying down, do 10 hollow body rocks (start on back, roll to your front, always keeping head, arms, and legs of the ground, like rolling in the mud), push to plank on the last, then “check the action” with a 10-count of shoulder taps, then “fire”with 10 jumps (legs forward into crouch, hands don’t move). Made mention that an AK mag holds 20 to 30 rounds, so they can be greatful they only had to fire 10.

Alternatively, do reps of 3, and rinse and repeat for as many Pax as there are (use a multiplier if there’s 3 or less)

Clickety-Clack (building custom keyboards)

Start at one median, go to the next.

Fancy feet for a Pax-count of 10, then smash the enter key with a frog jump. Continue through each pax.

Downhill MTB (Bikes)

Freddy Mercury, starting slow and speeding up, then pop up and do 6 box jumps burpees

Books (C.S. Lewis, LOTR)

Orc squats: deep squat, hands on the ground, clean and jerk, landing with hands overhead, in a deeper squat). 20 reps.

Lewis – Mere Christianity – dynamic tension: front, side, down, up. Go through twice, recover for 20 sec, then twice more.

Combatives:

45° defense. Start with hands up in disarming position. Block punch by stepping close at a 45° angle. Don’t want to be too far away from attacker. As you step, punch to floating ribs, then follow with an elbow to the GB20 pressure point.
