The Park is Mine

AO: Ground Pounder
Workout Date: 07/31/21
This is the final Carpex Q of this year’s Q Swap Week with South Wake. What’s this Raleigh guy doing Qing this workout? Well, Your Humble Correspondent (YHC) signed up to Q before the Swap Week was announced and managed, via intense negotiations with BFF Disco Duck, to hold on to the slot. I did pick up a couple of Carpex shirts from Mudgear to make sure I represented appropriately.

Warm Up:
State the mission, check for FNGs(0), and give the disclaimer.
To give South Wake the full Carpex experience, Pledge that Allegiance
Side Straddle Hops x20 In Cadence (IC)
Good Mornings x5 IC
Sir Fazio Arm Circles forward x10 IC
Sir Fazio Arm Circles reverse x10 IC

Main Event:
1) Mosey to the playground and split into three teams, rotating in one team at a time to perform five pull ups while the other teams performed As Many Reps As Possible (AMRAP) Merkins, then squats. Continue until everyone has performed pull ups three times. Execution was clunky; YHC is still trying to smooth out how to pull this off, since pull ups usually get overlooked.
2) Mosey to the jogging path for Train Tracks. Repeato until each PAX has jumped for three cycles.
3) Mosey to rock pile and grab a rock for rock work in the open parking spaces. Curls, Overhead Press, Triceps Extensions, Bent Over Rows, American Hammers, WW1s, maybe others I can’t remember. Rep from the frisbee golf tournament comes over to ask how long we were going to be blocking the parking spaces. Did I mention there was a frisbee golf tournament going on in the park at the same time? We wrapped up and moved on. Totally forgot to call Grounder Pounders. Very missed opportunity.
4) Mosey to the wall behind the baseball field for 10-15-10 “bench”work pyramid. Left-Right Step Ups, Irkins, Dips, Little Gyno Crunches (LGCs), Derkins.
5) Mosey to restroom building for Balls to the Wall (10 count/PAX), People’s Chair (10 count/PAX), and Australian Mountain Climbers x10 IC. Mosey back to playground for Mary.

Mary:
Dolly x10 IC (WWW correctly begins to channel Callahan mumble chatter here)
Homer to Marge x10 IC
Rosalita x10 IC
Heel tap Freddy Mercurys x10 IC
WWW suggests Pamela Andersons, so I ask if he wants to demo and lead them. Affirmative. x10 IC
Not sure if there were any more exercises.
Stretching to close it out. World’s Greatest Stretch with Pigeon Pose. Not “Olivia Newton John crap,” as Forceps called it. LOL.

COT:
9 PAX (5 South Wake, 4 Carpex)
Announcements.
Prayers spoken and unspoken.

Naked Moleskin:
I had grand plans for a double train track exercise that met in the middle, but not enough PAX and three cycles were more than enough. Sheesh!
Someday I will figure out a smooth way for PAX to get in pull ups when bars are available.
T-claps to Site Q Forceps for the rockin’ 80s playlist. When he called the stretching Olivia Newton John crap, I totally thought he was dissing his own playlist and didn’t recognize A-ha’s greatest pop hit.
When I called Little Gyno Crunches, DOA heard “Little Dino Crunches”. I could only imagine crunches with little T-Rex arms.
The dust up with the frisbee golf guys wasn’t really a big deal, he just asked how long we were going to be. I did enjoy The Park is Mine back in the 1980s and usually spend way too much time coming up with titles for backblasts so I just went with it.
Two for coffeeteria. YHC and WWW.
This was my eighty-sixth #F3Q21 #2021Challenge Q (eighty-ninth overall). Next Q is Saturday 8/7 at Catalyst for my seven year anniversary.

Good Things Take Hard Work

YHC is seriously trying to come back from a variety of injuries that have plagued my body the last 8 weeks or so and…I’m pretty far back on BRR training, so when I Q, the PAX are along the ride with me to make these last 7 weeks count in my training for BRR. No better way to do that than hit the ramp at Ting for some repeats. In addition, YHC is celebrating 19 years of marriage to my wonderful wife today. 16 PAX came to celebrate the value of hard work to strengthen their bodies today on the grounds of Paradise City. Message for the day as well…it takes hard work to build a strong marriage as well. Don’t forget to put the work in with your M’s…and don’t mentally/emotionally fartsack when it counts!

FNG’s: None
Warm Up: A mosey down the long end of the main lot followed by Windmills x 10 IC, Frankensteins x10 IC, and Imperial Walkers x 10 IC. Another mosey down to the other end for Sir Fazio’s x 10 IC F/R and Hillbillies x 10 IC.
The Workout: Counted off by 3’s. 3 Indian Run lines would run the ramp/tennis court loop until 19 “indians” got to the front of the line. All groups stopped generally at the same spot when finished. We proceeded to do 19 Prisoner Squats and 19 Shoulder Taps IC. Same Indian Run lines back the other way, again, waiting to get 19 “indians” to the front of the line before stopping back by the cars. Comments were made to quit the workout there and go grab coffee. We did 19 SSH IC and 19 Mountain Climbers IC before moseying back to the bottom of the ramp.

We would run the ramp for the remainder of time. At the bottom, it would be Merkins starting at 1. At the top, it would be Step-Ups on the wall starting at 2. Going up the ramp, PAX were supposed to go between 80-100%, and a mosey back down the ramp. We went all the way to 19…stacking up odd numbers at the bottom, and even numbers at the top. Those finishing first, did what we do, they found a 6 and finished out with them. With only 4 minutes to go, YHC asked about mileage. God forbid, we don’t get our 3 miles. 2 of 3 PAX shared over 3 mile readings (other idea was 4 mins. of Indian runs), so we headed back for Mary.
Mary: 19 WW2’s and some were pissed that I finished 30 seconds early.
Announcements: Q Swap with Carpex begins next week. They come to us for a featured guest workout at 1 site each day (2 on Wednesday).
T-Claps (Recognition): Thanks to Pikachu, 187, Laettner, and Full House…all faster than me…for help getting me some low times for me on EC.
Prayer: Two kids in our community, battling illness. Our marriages and the strength, patience, and passion to nurture them. It was really nice to be at the helm again today…thanks for being there fellas!

Sorry 16 Bit

It was raining so POTS came to visit. It is always nice seeing POTS. Also Peeping Tom came down from Carpex. They must not have a parking deck workout on Friday. I’m assuming he was avoiding the rain. Or maybe he likes being around us.

EC: Emeril and Dawgpound for some Yoga
FNGs: Nope not one
Warm Up:

You know you bounced with me.
Foot trace
Tootsie Roll
Spinal Twist
Bat Wing
Fazio Arm Circles Forward/Backward
Seal Claps
Overhead Claps
Randies — right after Bat Wing

The Workout:

We did a bit of exercises before the main event

30 KB Swings
5 Push Ups on Bell Each Arm
5 Swings to High Pull
5 KB windmills each arm
10 Thrusters Each Arm

We went into the main event a bit early. I had to much time at the end.

The main event was the game Tabata format. This is 45 seconds work with 15 seconds of rest. You do three exercises. You do the same number of reps for each exercise. We started off with 4 reps. If you finish close to 30 seconds you add 2 reps for each exercise. If you finish after 45 seconds you remove two reps to each exercise. If the exercise is one arm or one leg then you split the reps between the left and right side.

20 rounds of:
Swing to High Pull
Thrusters
Kettle Bell Pushups

I thought the three exercises went well together. Afterwards I was good and sweaty.

Mary:

We did a bunch of stretching to loosen the legs. Need to put the work in after a workout like that so you can function the next day.

Announcements:

Uhh I don’t remember.

Sorry I don’t remember

Charmander, the lizard Pokemon

After moving back a week in the Q schedule for Crazy Ivan to support Steamboat’s V Q YHC found himself with three Qs in one week. It lined up close enough to Pokemon’s 25 year anniversary so it only made sense to coordinate the workouts around the original three starters.

Today’s workout celebrated Charmander, the Lizard Pokemon. Charmander is easily the most popular of the original three starters and is the one that YHC likes the least. Therefore there were no Charmander references during the workout – this guy has had enough love over the years, trust me.

Word was received the day before that CarPex was going to arrive in force as they were considering starting a steel mace workout. YHC made sure that we hit the highlight tour of exercises for them to learn from – was great to have the company (even if it did come with an excessive amount of mumble chatter – that’s what burpees are for!).

FNGs:

None today – would’ve been great, we could have named them after a Pokemon.
Warm Up:

SSH x20

Hips in a barrel x5 each direction

Burpees x5 – the mumble chatter was already over the top

Good morning x11 IC

Still too much chit chat so we grabbed our maces and moseyed to the top of the deck

The Workout:

We moseyed to just past the entrance to the upper deck and circled up for a demonstration of the death march. We then performed 1 in cadence.

Moseying the short distance across the deck pax were given a demonstration of the 360. We then did 10 on YHC’s swing.

We gravediggered back to where we started up top for 2 death marches. Mosey back to the other side for 9 360s – Dawgpound figured out what we were doing. Repeato for 11s all the way through.

After finishing the 11s we moseyed back down to the bottom level. Circling up at start YHC demonstrated the ballistic curl – we did 10 and then moseyed halfway down the deck. There we demonstrated the mace deadlift – two legged first then one legged. 1 IC and then a new exercise – we bunny hopped with the mace back to the start. 9 ballistic curls kept our 11s going. Getting short on time we dropped the mosey/bunny hop and did our 11s stationary after the 5 / 6 set.

In the circle pax were instructed to hold their mace vertically overhead. After taking a knee, putting a hand down, and swinging the leg through they realized they were getting a very detailed Turkish Getup demonstration. Following the one getup we performed 5x Side Plank tucks – these were supposed to be the star of another set of 11s but 10 of those wasn’t going to happen and the clock was not being kind at this point. We did another Turkish Getup on the other side followed by 5 more side plank tucks and we moved onto mary.

We grabbed some call for preacher’s chair with the mace out front horizontally – 10x IC was followed by 10x Homer to Marge IC two legged then 10x IC one legged. We repeated all of those again on the other side.

Mary:

American hammer w/mace – 20x IC

Freddie Mercury x10 IC

Yoga – downward dog, knee down crescent lunge, pigeon pose

Announcements:

YHC’s TED talk tonight – “So you want to be a runner?”

T-Claps (Recognition):

CarPex pax for making the trip to learn the ways of the mace

Prayer:

Saddique for wisdom, Mike for COVID recovery, Fumunga for surgery recovery, our country for a smooth transition this week.

15 seconds is a lot

A 8:30PM text message chain lead to a terrible idea of 7 mile EC at 0430 this morning. Doesn’t take a math genius that that means cutting it close to a 0530 workout, especially having the Q. It got worse once we factored in someone being a minute late and having to make an expected pit-stop along the way. But we got it in and came back to a parking deck with numerous pax despite the F3 rendition of Holly Springs half planned for the next day.

FNGs:

None – a real shame.
Warm Up:

Bounce for 60s

SSH x20 IC

Foot Circles x5 each direction

Fazio Arm Circles x10 each direction

Trunk Twists x10 IC

Daisy Pickers x10 IC

Burpees x5
The Workout:

Tabata – 1 minute on (that extra 15 seconds is a pistol), 15 seconds off. 5 rounds of 6 exercises:

Kettlebell Swings
Clean & press
Snatch
Figure 8
Turkish Getups
Chillcut
Mary:

Stretching

Dungeons, Dragons, Tigers, and Blood

9 pax came out for what YHC promised to be a “fun game” at the track. Apparently there was some confusion as Peeping Tom did not realize that this AO was speedwork – woops. He pushed through though.

Before we started all pax confirmed their short interval pace per the RRCA pace chart provided by YHC.

A surprising lack of comments about my interesting dice selection of using a D8 and a D4 – for thos uneducated not nerdy enough, dice come in more than just the standard six sided variety. Lipstick correctly assessed after the workout that these were for Dungeons and Dragons, or more commonly after an unjustified bad rap in the 80s D&D.

FNGs: None today
Warm Up:

Mosey to the track. Side to side leg swings x10, Tiger Claws x10, warm up lap
The Workout:

First roll had a 6 on the D8 and a 3 on the D4 – so we did 3x 600s starting halfway around the track with a target of the recovery lasting half as long as the work portion. Keeping this ratio makes speed work absolutely brutal and it was exacerbated by the oppressive humidity this morning.

Between rounds we did ab solution x5 IC (8 count) plus a recovery lap.

Roll two had a 4 and a 2 (well, it was a 1 but that was too easy) so we did 2x 400s with the recovery again being half of the working time just around the finish line. We ran these in the opposite direction like the law breakers that we are.

Between rounds we did ab solution x5 IC (8 count) plus a recovery 200m.

Our last interval was determined by a good old fashioned D6 – ended up doing one more 400m where pax were told they could go a little faster if they were still feeling spunky.

After our last interval we did some strides, running easy to the first goal, picking up through to the end of the second, and then rolling through to the 100m line. We did four of these.

Mary:

Jumping back over the fence is always one of the tougher maneuvers of the morning. Recover mosey back to the flag. Butterfly stretch, seated hamstring stretches, chattaronga, downward dog.

Mary Poppins

YHC knew the rain would be involved at Paradise City for today’s workout. Time to get creative bc I hate getting soaked during a workout. Pulled in at 0540 to 1 car in the parking lot. I looked up and here comes Pikachu running across the parking lot holding 4 golf umbrellas as YHC asked him to bring. I had 5 myself. One more car rolled in with a couple mins to spare. 4PAX were ready to roll…then we see a white truck approaching follow by another car. We waited with umbrellas up as they parked. No late burpees penalized as YHC was feeling jolly. They looked at us funny when I said grab an umbrella though. This was a Mary Poppins workout. Here’s how the fun took place.

Warm Up:
Ramp mosey up/down while holding umbrellas
Top (reg) – one handed smurf jacks x20 IC
Bottom (slides) – one handed mountain climbers x20 IC
Top (backwards) – one handed imperial walkers into Hill billies x10 IC each
Bottom (carioca)- gorilla squats x10 on my up and down

The Workout:
Head to top of ramp
Box jumps and one armed dips holding umbrellas
X10 each 3 rds
Peeping Tom took a spill but was ok

Indian umbrella run to guard rails
One armed irkens w/U x10 switch arms
Monkey humpers x10 IC
3 rds

Mosey to tunnel – put down umbrellas
Ascending and decending testicles with shoulder taps x10 IC @ 30, 45, 90
LBCs x15 to let our shoulder recover
then 90, 45, 30 degrees legs on wall
Reverse LBCs x15 IC

Partner up
P1 holds Al Gore on wall
P2 bear crawl out of tunnel with umbrella (3 legged bear) to designated spot and back
Switch
Repeat but with duck walk
The plan was to stay dry and do mary in the tunnels but Lipstick busted one and we all came close to merlot. So thanks to him we got our backs wet.

Mary (Poppins)):
w/umbrellas
– 4 corners x10 reverse R&R x10
– H2M x10, 1 legged x10, switch
– Windshield wipers x10 IC

Always a pleasure to lead.

BS Out!

Kryptonite-esque Monday Morning

YHC preblasted the night before to warn PAX that today would be a high tempo style bootcamp with around 3 miles of running.  I don’t know if it was that, a little Q sheet discrepancy, or a combination of both, that led to a typical PC workout to have lower than expected numbers.  There was no flag, no site Qs, and no PAX from Woodcreek 🙁

3 Mile EC was done by Warbucks, Maybelline, and YHC.
2 Mile EC was done by Dawgpound, Buford and Cowboy.

FNGs: none
Warm Up: Mosey up the ramp to the top by the ticket counter.  Circle up for the following:
Good Mornings ICx10
Frankenstein Leg Kicks ICx10
Seal Claps ICx10

The Workout: Partner up based on speed. Partners started running in opposite directions until they met up.  When they did meet, 5 pattie cake merkins were performed.  Then turn back and run in the opposite direction until meeting up again with said partner.  This was done until there was a total of 10 meetings.  Some of the PAX that finished early did a few core style exercises near the ticket counter area until the 6 arrived.
Mosey down the ramp and over to the tunnel.  Partner 1 did BTTW while Partner 2 ran to the end of the path and back, flapjack.  Then People’s Chair was performed while the other partner ran to the end of the path and back, flapjack.  Mosey over to the basketball court / “virtual flag” area.

Mary: Circle up at the basketball court.  Each PAX called out a 10 count exercise.  Except for Lucky Charms who called 5 Burpees OYO which led YHC to conclude with 10 Turkish Getups OYO.
Announcements: We are about a month out from HSHM.  This was most likely YHC’s final Q in South Wake.
T-Claps (Recognition): Maybelline getting faster and stronger post injury
Prayer: Unspoken, YHC took us out

Truly an honor to lead – thanks guys for coming!

Everything else was spot on…

After circling up and discussing the routes, I see a few PAX make a quick stop at the shovel flag to tear off a few squares from the standard issue R4TJ tp roll. There was a lot of mumblechatter at CoT about the number of “pitstops” that were made along the various routes. Nothing like a good run to get the body flowing..

EC: Lipstick, Pikachu, Redenbacher, UTI

FNGs: None, probably went to TBD for an easy workout.

Warm Up: YHC totally butchered the first exercise and started counting off SSH without letting PAX know what the exercise was….everything else was spot on.

All exercises in cadence, 15 X SSH, 15 X Daisy Pickers and off we go.

The Workout:

A few weeks ago, UTI suggested we add a 3 mile option at R4TJ. We have had a good turnout and it is great to see some new faces coming out to get some miles in. Keep up the good work men!

3 Mile Route:

5 Mile Route:

Mary: I hear they do that at TBD if you are interested…

Announcements: Picnic this weekend, sign up to bring something. Fill up the Q sheet – it was mentioned that the F3 standard is that the number of times you post a week is the number of times you should be the site Q each month. Peer led workouts is one of the core principles of F3.

T-Claps (Recognition): Great to see some more new faces to take advantage of the 3 mile option! Good work and excellent choice raising your standard and challenging yourself with a tough run (and not taking the easy route at Womble this morning).

Prayer:  Bernie and his family, UTI’s co-worker battling cancer, Cape Fear PAX that recently passed, unspoken

YHC took us out.
